About MASS

Materials and Sustainable Systems works as a collective to develop a large network of researchers, designers, and innovators who share our vision for a sustainable future. Our community is an extension of the Material Library at the University of Bergen, Faculty of Fine Art, Music, and Design. In addition to existing as a resource for practitioners in sustainability, our team has created a Podcast series that investigates one theme per semester. As a growing resource, we plan to provide the public with notable discoveries and technologies that address issues related to the current climate crisis.

A dedication to sustainable materials and technologies that are accessible to all people

Courageous
Acknowledging risk-taking as a tool to break boundaries in current production processes

Circular
Understanding that all materials should participate within a circular economy to create sustainable systems

Flexible
Materials should react to changing ecosystems and adapt to environmental shifts.

Considerate
Celebrating innovation that does not disrupt environmental cycles and human health.

Ecological
Highlighting materials that put environmental importance at the forefront.

Essential
Create and use only what is needed, rather than wanted.

Autumn 2019: Dewasted

According to an article published by the World Bank Report, 2.1 Billion Tonnes of global waste was sent to landfills in 2016. If waste continues to be created at the same rate, global waste is estimated to reach 3.4 Billion Tonnes by 2050. This weight is equivalent to 9,315 Empire State Buildings. To divert waste from
entering landfills, streams of waste must be reconsidered as opportunities for new material development. The theme, Dewasted, presents projects that engage in circular value chains, which challenge standard industrial materials. We invite individuals to engage in a critical dialogue to redefine waste and
opportunities for future material development.
